Wide Neck Acoustic Guitar?
Hello all!
My fiancé’s mom is a music teacher so I’ve been taking guitar lessons for about a year now, the problem is I’m currently playing on a Takamine acoustic (Which I LOVE cause it was my dad’s guitar who passed a few years ago) The problem I’m having is one, I don’t want anything to happen to his guitar cause it’s all I have left of him and two the neck is too skinny ( I have big hands )….
Does anyone know of a good Wide Neck Acoustic that’s NOT a classical guitar? I don’t want to play on a classical cause I’m learning rock on my acoustic and it’s too hard on a classic. If anyone knows of a good brand that makes wide necks I’d love to know, especially if it’s a Takamine cause I LOVE their guitar.

Generally speaking, steel string acoustics do not have very wide necks, and only classical guitars have the really wide neck that youre looking for. In recent years, a few manufacturers (mostly small ones) have come out with kinda hybrid acoustics that have a classical body and neck but with tuners that work for steel strings and the proper bridge too….
BUT LOOK OUT!!!! As a guitar repairman, I see things like this A LOT! The truth is that youre not likely going to find what youre looking for unless you have it custom made. The reason for this is that many times these smaller companies use an actual classical guitar to make their hybrid. THIS IS A BAD IDEA. Steel strings put WAY more tension on a guitars neck than nylon strings do, and most steel string guitars are designed to handle this pressure. Classicals are not. These hybrids WILL break eventually. By turning a classical into a steel string, all youre really doing is throwing your money down a hole–the repair shop hole that is.
So my best advice would be to find a different acoustic (martins and older Harmonys have slightly wider necks than Takamines) and stick with it. OR, if youre willing to spend the cash, have one custom made–its the only way youre going to get a quality instrument that has what youre looking for (By the way, I build custom instruments at my shop in AZ, so check out gabrielsguitars.com if you’re interested).
